Goal/Reason (Rickard, 2006)
  • Part of a larger campaign in Southeast Tennesse & Northwest Georgia
  • Chattanooga, key rail center
    • Extensive rails in the South
      • This would help move Union troops around the South
  • Rosecrans (Union) was defeated by Bragg (Confederate)
Overview/Strategy (ABPP)


  • Rosecrans tried to force the Confederates out of the Chattanooga
  • Bragg pounded upon Rosencrans relentlessly
    • The pounding created a gap which the Confederates tried to take control of
    • This caused panic and the Union retreated

  • Temporarily halted the push into the South
